• How Your Nuwarm® System Works

When you first switch it on, your heat mat will run at full power to warm the floor to your chosen temperature. Once it reaches that temperature, it uses much less energy - only turning on occasionally to maintain the warmth.

The system is smart too—it only switches back on when the floor temperature drops by more than 1.1°C (based on the default thermostat setting).

  • What Will It Cost to Run?

The answer depends on a few key factors: the size of the room, how well it’s insulated, the type of floor covering, and your electricity rate. Here's a rough idea of what you might expect:

A small, well-insulated bathroom (around 5m²) typically costs around £0.12 per hour to run.

A larger space like a 20m² living room might use closer to £0.49 per hour, depending on how it's used and heated.

  • How to Make It More Efficient

Good insulation is key. By insulating both the floor and the room properly, your system will heat up faster, run more efficiently, and could cut your running costs by up to 50%.

The reason insulation is so important is that it reflects heat upwards into the room rather than letting it escape into the subfloor.

What Affects Your Underfloor Heating Performance?

To get the most comfort and efficiency from your Nuwarm® heat mat system, a few things about your room can make a big difference:

  • Room Size
  • Large glass features like bifold doors or big windows
  • High ceilings or skylights that can let heat escape
  • How well the room is insulated overall
  • Whether insulation boards are used under the heating system
  • How long the system runs each day
  • Your electricity rate (cost per kilowatt-hour)

Reducing Your Running Costs

Want to get the most out of your Nuwarm® underfloor heating without overspending? Here are a few simple tips to help you run your system more efficiently and keep energy costs down:

1. Use Proper Insulation:

Good insulation makes a big difference. We recommend installing at least 6mm of insulation board beneath your heat mat. This helps direct more warmth upward into the room, rather than losing it into the subfloor—meaning faster heat-up times and lower energy use.

2. Zone Your System:

Divide your heating into separate zones—like kitchen, living room, hallway, and bathroom. This gives you independent control of each space, so you’re only heating the rooms you’re actually using.

3. Set Smart Schedules:

Programming your thermostat is key to keeping things efficient. With Nuwarm® thermostats, you can easily schedule heating around your daily routine—boosting warmth when you need it and reducing it when you don’t.

Our thermostats offer four programmable time periods per day:
Wake, Leave, Return, and Sleep—so your home stays warm when you're there, and saves energy when you're not.

Choosing the Right System Matters

The cost of running electric underfloor heating depends on more than just energy prices—the type of system you install plays a big role too. Factors like room size, insulation, flooring type, and heat output all impact how efficient and cost-effective your setup will be.

At Nuwarm, we offer a range of systems designed for different spaces and floor finishes, from bathrooms and kitchens to larger open-plan areas.
